Listen to the latest from post-punk kingpins Protomartyr (St. Paul show MONDAY!)
Four albums in, Protomartyr are a well-known quality. They are purveyors of some of the very best tightly-wound, hyper-literate post-punk this side of wherever Mark E. Smith is rumbling around, and their latest LP is another case study in thoughtful-yet-propulsive jams. Somehow a little darker than even their previous material, Relatives in Descent is gloomy to the extreme, reflecting our current national mood under the waves of galloping drums, charging bass, sharp guitar lines and Joe Casey’s cultured howl. It is a tense but rewarding listen that is both of the moment and timeless. I can’t recommend this record enough.
If you haven’t experienced Protomartyr over the last few years and the garbled words above do anything for you, dive in to their latest LP below (and check out their impressive back catalog to break up the repetitive spins of their new LP). After missing the Twin Cities on multiple tours, it will be good to have the band in town Monday night for what should be an outstanding show at the Turf Club. Joining the band will be locals WAVELESS and Failed Flowers, who have a local connect after they put out music on Twin Cities label 25 Diamonds. Get there early and catch all three bands.
