I heard English folk musician Olivia Chaney live a couple years back when she performed in an upper level auditorium at the U’s Northrup Hall. Though it seemed a strange place for a show (I have not been to one there before or since) it was an utterly enchanting evening. There was not much there aside from Chaney, her guitar and piano, and a transfixed audience.
Chaney performs folk of a baroque variety, influenced both by English folk greats of the 60’s/70’s as well as some folks you might not expect (for instance her latest record has an Everly Brothers cover and she has collaborated with the Decembersists).
Chaney’s latest, Shelter, is available now via Nonesuch Records (Thomas Bartlett produced the record). The Twin Cities is also lucky to be hosting her again this week: Friday at the Bryant Lake Bowl. It should be a magical and intimate evening (info/tix).
