ICYMI (Best of 2018): The manic electronic noise of Marijuana Deathsquads latest LP Tuff Guy Electronics (SHOW TONIGHT at Broder’s Jan Turf Residency!)
Local noisy misfits Marijuana Deathsquads — despite a growing catalog of solid EPs and LPs to their name — have always and will always be a band best experienced in the flesh. Their kinetic energy on stage, and the manipulated sound and pulsing waves of beats they jam through the speakers — not to mention the multiple live drummers — is why they are held in such esteem. Yet over the last decade they’ve dropped some really great recorded music. Frankly I’m always surprised how well they are able to capture the controlled chaos on record.
The latest examples of the band trying to capture lightening, and doing a pretty great job at is, is on their Tuff Guy Electronics LP on the Pioneer Works Press label. Recorded in Minneapolis, Berlin, NYC and Eaux Claires, it is six songs of confident-yet-jittery electronics, motorik beats and tangled (and much higher in the mix) vocals that fans of the band will instantly recognize. You can listen to the 10-minute mindbender “Last Sunny Day” below, but the whole LP is worth your time, especially the frantic “Ain’t Been Right Since That Party” and the epic “Where That Wild Thing Is.” It’s their first release since 2013, and it’s as much of a trip as you’d expect. Listen below and buy a limited edition 12″ from their bandcamp page.
Whatever current members are playing in MDS, they will be joining Andrew Broder’s ‘Residency at The End of The World’ January Turf Club residency tonight for week 2 of the festivities. They’ll be joined by Gully Boys, Sophia Erin and DJ Keezy & Name (DJ Set) for a night of music you really shouldn’t miss. $12 will get you in (and go to a good cause) and doors open at 7pm.
