VIDEO: Durand Jones and the Indications’ “Long Way Home” / Local Show
FoFor a brief period in time it seemed like America was obsessed with throwback soul. Artists like Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Lee Fields all had their moment in the sun. The Twin Cities even got in on the action with homegrown Sonny Knight and the Lakers. A few years later, however, and the untimely deaths of almost all of those artists has cast a bit of a pallor over that scene.
Luckily for those of us to love old soul, the torch is getting picked up by the likes of bands like Durand Jones & the Indications and Indiana group whom share similar tastes. Jones and company create soul in a similar vein to The Impressions in the time they were led by Curtis Mayfield. They share a root in gospel music, a focus on social consciousness, as well as a comparable overall aesthetic. Just as in Mayfield’s time there is certainly plenty to sing about now – Durand Jones & the Indications focused their next album American Love Call (3/1, Dead Oceans) around “experience with the justice system in America.”
Check out the video for single “Long Way Home” above and if you dig it, the band will be in the 7th St. Entry on 4/9 (tix/info).
