Stream New Old Time Relijun EP / Show Next Week
Old Time Relijun are a semi-legendary band from Olympia whom have divided critics for the past twenty plus years. They have inspired some of Pitchfork’s most unnecessarily cruel reviews of all time, as well as reviews that sing the band’s praises. What I suspect it largely boils down to is how you feel about frontman Aarington de Dionyso’s unconventional vocals and unhinged approach to his craft. To give you some idea, de Dionyso has an almost unearthly vocal range and he’s an expert at catapulting wildly between extremes.
De Dionyso, along with Germaine Baca (drums), Aaron Hartman (upright bass), and Ben Hartman (sax), create an unholy racket of lo-fi experimental no wave punk music along mystical and mysterious themes. If that doesn’t sound like your bag, it probably isn’t! But if you gravitate towards the unconventional, it’s something that Old Time Relijun happens to do exceptionally well.
The band has a brand new EP See Now and Know (their first in nearly a decade) out now and you can stream it below. They will also make a rare Twin Cities appearance next week at the 7th St. Entry (info / tix) which should be a fantastic time (the band is notoriously pretty wild live). Local favorite XOXO TECH will also open the show which is another reason it should not be one to miss.
