Introducing: Betazoid
As of late I have been really digging Scam Likely, the recent debut cassette from Minneapolis trio Betazoid. The band does some really interesting things with three part harmonies – occasionally bringing to mind some of the vocal acrobatics I typically associate with some Middle Eastern as well as Gaelic genres (the lead vox particularly does some impressive turns). This is not exactly World Music though – it’s experimental synthpop that marries it’s harmonies to idiosyncratic pop structures that touch on elements of folk, drone, and prog.
The band consists of Lisa Harrigan, Tara Loeper, and Emily Kastrul, all of whom share vocal duties, with Harrigan and Kastrul also playing bass/synths respectively. Scam Likely was recorded by Matt Bedrosian and is self-released. While cassette copies appear to be sold out, you can still stream the whole thing via their bandcamp or below. I highly suggest you do. Recommended track: “Dime Bag” (but they all are great).
Betazoid do not have any local shows upcoming currently but hopefully that changes soon.
