Listen to Bill Callahan’s New LP (Minneapolis show Saturday!)
It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard from smarty-pants mopey singer-songwriter Bill Callahan, and a quick scan from the PR machines indicates he has settled down into a happy and fruitful domestic life. Good for you, Bill. But what does this mean for a guy who was best suited for making songs that remind us that we are all going to die, and that it will probably be painful and lonely along the way? Well, not much. The music is still subdued and minimal, and his new LP Shepherd in Sheepskin Vest still revolves around his earthy-yet-abstract songwriting and understated baritone. While never running the risk of being confused with a “joyous” record, there are little hints of tranquility mixed in with the usual sojourns about walking alone and being ready for death. Getting older and being happy seems to have mellowed Callahan a bit without taking away his ability to write smart, enjoyable songs.
Joining Mr. Callahan at the Cedar Saturday night will be songwriter Bill MacKay. Music at 8 pm for this all ages show, with tickets costing a cool $28 at the door. More info/buy tickets HERE.
