Listen to Altin Gün’s reimagining of Turkish pop & funk on their Gece LP (St. Paul Show TONIGHT!)
The six members of Altin Gün are from the Netherlands, but their sound mines the rich legacy of Turkish funk and electro pop. If you didn’t know better, you’d think their recently released 2nd LP, Gece, was part of the never-ending wave of killer reissues that uncover music that you can’t believe you missed. But like bands like Khruangbin, they are actually a new band mining a rich musical history in order to create a funky new sound. Listen below to a couple of the killer songs from Gece, an album that dropped earlier this year to widespread acclaim, even if it seems like this great record has somehow flown under the radar of many folks. If you’re in the Twin Cities area you’ll want to make sure to catch them tonight at the Turf Club in St. Paul when their tour makes a stop in our neck of the woods. Tickets will cost you $15 and local sonic explorers Thunderbolt Pagoda are opening up the show.
