Beasthead: “Mercy Kill”
It’s been a quiet 2019 for local boys Beasthead, but when their latest song ‘Mercy Kill’ popped up on my radar last week I was thrilled then found a sudden pit in my stomach wondering if this was the band’s swan song now that lead-singer Harry lives in California *sad trombone slide. But a recent late-night chat with Doug (keys/synth), they continue to work on new music in that one excellent-Postal-Service-album style via email and any other means necessary.
‘Mercy Kill’ centers around Harry having to put a bird out of its misery after flying into a window and breaking its neck. He didn’t think it would be difficult to do, but ultimately the act was more taxing than he initially thought. “We know what’s right. We know what we’re supposed to do. But that does not make doing it any easier. This song is about the emotional nuances that come from confronting this, and how these nuances influence our choices”.
So while the song centers around the unfortunate end of a bird’s life, I’m thankful that Beasthead is still very much alive and well.
