Madison McFerrin Expands on Her Soul-Capella Sound on New EP You + I (Minneapolis Show Thursday!)
Two summers ago I was on vacation in Brooklyn and went to a show headlined by the band Standing on the Corner that also featured a handful of other bands I had not heard of, hoping for the best. One artist performing at that show blew me away with her soulful, lush, looped a cappella singing. She created sonic tapestry with just her voice and clapping that had the crowd in awe. I had every intention of following up on her music when I got home from that vacation, but like the dummy that I am I never did.
Fast forward a year and a half later, to about a week ago, and I saw the name Madison McFerrin listed for an upcoming Minneapolis concert and had a “aha” moment, realizing that she was that artist I had seen at the Music Hall of Williamsburg that summer night. As you can hear from her recently released EP You + I, her sound has expanded beyond just her voice and clapping on her new record, resulting in an incredible mix of dusty soul and R&B. Her voice is timeless, as has always been the case, and the music on this record touches on both classic sounds while also referencing the modern soul/R&B zeitgeist. Imagine your favorite minimalist indie rap producer getting blended with your favorite neo-soul singer. Except it’s all one person. You can listen to and purchase the record below from her Bandcamp page.
McFerrin will be performing Thursday at Icehouse in Minneapolis with Jessica Manning for what should be an outstanding show. It is a 21+ show with music starting at 9. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased HERE.
