Song of the Week: Les Amazones D’Afrique “Love”
I loved Les Amazones d’Afrique early 2017 debut LP République Amazone something fierce, so I was very excited to see that the Malian musicians and social change activists who come together in a self-described pan-African “supergroup.” In addition to their genre-bending music, they are radical change makers. In their press materials they talk about how their music “tackles [violence against women] head on. Three generations of women sing out in unison, calling for a future without the threat of female genital mutilation (FGM), sexual violence, lack of education and forced marriage.”
Today they released their sophomore album Amazones Power and it brings the heat just like their debut album. The whole album is outstanding and is an early leader in the prestigious Josh’s Album of the Year (™) race. Listen below to “Love,” a banger that showcases their tightly wound, highly melodic, forward-looking and musically dexterous blend that has made them one of the most exciting bands of the last few years.
