Over the last few weeks I’ve been immersed in the sound collage that Jeff Parker (guitarist for Tortoise) has created on his latest solo LP Suite for Max Brown. The album is a stunning spectrum of sound and genre, ranging from heady jazz to afro-funk to dusty soul that sounds like it could have come from J Dilla. The record blends live music and samples in a way that makes this album feel like a world-beating compilation, despite being all anchored around one artist.
