Introducing: Discovery Zone

JJ Weihl is a New York-born musician who has resided in Berlin for a number of years, playing in experimental pop quartet Fenster and acting as creative director for video art collective VIDEOKILLS. She also performs solo under the name Discovery Zone.

As Discovery Zone, Weihl released her full length debut album Remote Control this past Summer, and it’s a stunning work of experimental dream pop.  It’s also something of a concept album, playing with conceptions of reality and control.

The title, “Remote Control” could be interpreted as something that gives agency or contrarily, removes it, and that ambiguity is intentional.  Weihl is interested in the age old conversation of free will vs predetermination. How that comes across in the album’s non spoken word tracks is open to interpretation but regardless, it is the guiding philosophy that brought the tunes together.

What that is to the casual listener is gorgeously constructed, intricately layered swaths of reverb-laden melodies and entrancing meditations on dance music. Check out/purchase the whole thing below which is available electronically or on vinyl.
