The Fresh Five: Mike Lust, Natalie Bergman, Low Hanging Fruits, Part Chimp and The Goon Sax
For the Fresh Five we pick out five great new(ish) jams that we’re currently obsessing over. Check out the accompanying playlist below for your listening pleasure.
Mike is a long time Chicago mainstay with both his bands (Tight Phantomz, Lustre King) and production work just dropped his first ever solo album Demented Wings. “Dancetaria” mixes a little bit of garage rock, dream pop and Mike’s distinctive voice into a song that is deceptively catchy and you’ll find yourself coming back to it more than you realize.
Wild Belle’s Natalie Bergman released her debut Mercy earlier this year, a record born out of personal tragedy. A remarkably interesting sort of modern gospel record that brings you in with its drum machines and sparse grooves. Check out this great backyard live performance of “I’m Going Home”
Low Hanging Fruits are a Korean indie band that bounce between synthy indie and a bit more guitar driven music with male/female vocals. “Ooooh” is a catchy song from their more guitar focus material.
If nothing else, UK noise rockers Part Chimp’s new record is the thickest sounding record of the year. “Up, With Notes” is a hard hitting rocker with a great ascending riff covered in a thick layer of fuzz.
Australian band The Goon Sax just put out their first album on Matador and it’s a great leap in sound. Psychic showcases some of the darker synth material that appears on the new album.
