Mike Kota: “Every Damn Day”
Mike Kota is is likely best known as the frontwoman for the talented local four piece Good Luck Finding Iris, which she’s led to some acclaim over the past years. Unbeknownst to us until now, she’s also a solo artist – and has been for some time. Though she hasn’t released any songs in the last three years, Kota recently decided to dive back in with the single “Every Damn Day,” which you can stream below.
The new single is a hazy dream of a song, featuring cascading echoes of guitar, an easy beat, and Kota’s pristine singing, at times manipulated with effects. The sound may be gentle but the lyricism is melancholy and harshly introspective. Often initially starting with poetry, Kota utilizes her songwriting process as one both of self-expression as well as healing, so it comes as no surprise that it results in some unflinching realness. Kota does an excellent job of turning those feelings into lush, compelling music.
It’s hard to tell an artist’s overall sound based on a single tune, but if we can extrapolate anything from “Every Damn Day,” it’s that Kota is a local talent to be reckoned with, solo or otherwise. Very much looking forward to hearing the rest of her new forthcoming EP (of which this tune will appear on).
