The Fresh Five: Anna Sun, Trentemøller, Shadow Universe, Blackwater Holylight and Pillow Queens
For the Fresh Five we pick out five great new(ish) jams that we’re currently obsessing over.
Anna Sun bring us a great clown-themed narrative video for their latest single “What A Shame” from their debut EP. “What A Shame” faces and deals with the trauma of losing a loved one to dementia as a glistening guitar pop track full of dreamy guitars.
Danish artist Trentemøller‘s album Memoria dropped last Friday and brought the video for “Like A Daydream” with its release. “Like A Day Dream” is a dreamy track full of 80s/90s shoegaze dream pop vibes with plenty of shades of Cocteau Twins and similar.
Shadow Universe comes to us all the way from Slovenia playing a very cinematic blend of post-rock, classical and post-metal. Full of lush strings and epic guitars, bands like Mono come to mind from this track. Shadow Universe’s full length drops March 11th and the band will be playing a live performance stream of the whole album on March 9th here.
Blackwater Holylight also strikes a very cinematic vision in both the video and the song “Silence/Motion”. Starting from a dramatic quietly picked acoustic guitar and star black and white water images building into the band standing on the beach to a soundtrack of fuzzed out doomy guitars and strings. Their 3rd album Silence/Motion came out late last year and boasts a solid lineup of guests in the modern underground metal scene as well. The band will be at the Turf Club on June 4th so put that on your calendar.
Pillow Queens hail from Dublin and bring us an anthemic song about imposter syndrome in “Hearts & Minds”. After a lot of accolades over their last album in 2020 they’re coming to the US for their first tour here starting at SXSW and hitting the Turf Club on April 6th.
