Fresh Five: Grace Ives, Frog Eyes, Elf Power, Mylar and Saint Kochi
For the Fresh Five we pick out five great new(ish) jams that we’re currently obsessing over.
Generally I’ll scan my inbox littered with tons of new songs for this feature but in this case, I’m skipping that for a new Grace Ives tune. I’d become a bit obsessed with Ives’ lofi bedroom synth pop over the past couple years especially the perfect under 2 minute “Babyyy“. “Lullaby” ups the production enough but not too much to keep that charm of the earlier recordings. Looking forward to the new album Janky Star which drops later this year sometime.
After “splitting” in 2018, Frog Eyes recently announced reuniting with a new album releasing this year. Carey Mercer’s distinct vocals are right in front of a great intense but slow burning track from the upcoming album.
While not as famous as some of their Elephant 6 peers, Elf Power has been churning out great psychedelic guitar pop records since the mid-90s. The band’s 14th album and first in 5 years comes out in July and sees them on a US tour (unfortunately with no local stop).
London synth pop quartet dropped an EP last Friday full of great disco pop gems to get you ready for summer. Paired with a great stylized video of the band I’ll be keeping an eye on them for future material.
With visuals as cinematic feeling as the music itself, Saint Kochi gives a string filled chamber pop track with just enough of those hazy psych vibes. Looking forward to more from Saint Kochi!
