Stream the Outstanding New ‘The Midst of Things’ LP from Local Funk/R&B Cornerstone MMYYKK
We are longtime fans of MMYYKK, both his solo work and also his bedrock role in Astralblak (fka Zuluzuluu), so it’s always exciting when he hits us with new music. He’s been dropping musical breadcrumbs from his new LP The Midst of Things over the last few weeks, and the whole LP went live last Friday.
As usual, the LP is tight, funky, with layered synths and drum machines creating the kind of funk I’ve previously described as “muscular.” It isn’t showy, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s rooted in a blend of classic funk, jazzy arrangements and more recent R&B, a blend he does as well as anyone. It also includes his usual sharp social commentary that is political without ever feeling pedantic. There are featured vocalists on about a third of the tracks, but most of the music and vocals center around the genius of MMYYKK. It’s another outstanding effort from an artist who never seems to let us down. Stream and purchase below.
