Review: Anthony Newes’ “Love Songs About Love”
Last month local songwriter Anthony Newes released his follow up to 2022’s excellent In The Dark of the Sea EP. Love Songs about Love is an EP consisting of five new songs which Newes self-released with contributions from Chris Bierden, Jeremy Ylvisaker, Ryan Young, and Paul Nevins.
News describes the new tunes as “mostly sample-based, electronic love songs, layered with analogue textures.” If that conjures an image of coldly dispassionate electronica though, Love Songs About Love is anything but. The new tracks are remarkably warm, intimate, and gently moving.
Newes has selected samples that perfectly serve up the songs’ tender vibe. That effect is also emphasized by the fact that the EP’s most folksy tracks serve as bookends, with the lovely acoustic and tambourine accented “To The Sunrise” opening and “La Mar” closing things out with a violin accompaniment (courtesy of Ryan Young).
In between Newes gets a bit more playful and experimental, fleshing out the middle three tracks with electronic sampling, bass, drum machine, and stronger vocal effects.
Songs About Love is out now and available for streaming/purchase here or below.
